How much do solar panels cost in South Africa?
A fully installed residential solar system typically costs between R60 000 and R210 000 in ZAR, depending on system size, battery capacity and roof complexity. Individual panels usually cost R1 800 to R3 200 each before installation.
What size solar system do I need?
Look at your monthly kWh usage on your municipal bill. As a rough guide, under 600 kWh a month suits a 3 kW system, 600–1 000 kWh suits a 5 kW system, and above 1 000 kWh usually needs 8 kW or more with a larger battery.
Why do solar quotes differ so much?
Installers price differently on panel and battery brands, inverter warranties, roof type, distance from the DB board and whether a Certificate of Compliance is included. Comparing at least three quotes on the same system size is the easiest way to see what is fair.
Do I need a Certificate of Compliance for solar?
Yes. Grid-tied and hybrid installations must be signed off by a registered electrician, and most municipalities require the system to be registered before it is switched on. Always confirm the CoC is included in the quoted price.
Can I install solar in stages?
Many South African households start with an inverter and battery for load-shedding backup, then add panels later. Tell installers this upfront so they size the inverter for the panels you plan to add.
